The Freedom Monument is a memorial located in the heard of Riga, right by entrance to the Old Town, erected on November 18, 1935 by the architect Kārlis Zāle to honour soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence during 1918 – 1920 and is considered an important symbol of the freedom and independence of Latvia.

Interesting fact: it is located right in the same spot where the previous central monument – a bronze equestrian statue of the Russian Emperor Peter the Great had stood from 1910 until the outbreak of World War I.
